…not entirely, anyway.
Funny, when we decided to take on our current renovation project, the thought of working with a general contractor never occurred to us. Yes, we were taking on the complete gutting and rebuilding of a 2400 sq. ft. structure with plans to expand it to 3000 sq. ft. (our largest reno project to date), yet, no, it still didn’t occur to us.
It wasn’t until after we completed the demolition phase (read about that enormous undertaking in my post called ‘Sweat Equity’) that it happened; organically and unplanned. We were working with our ‘windows and doors guy’ and while discussing the overall vision and timing needs the conversation turned to his suppliers, his direct line to top-of-the-line building materials, pricing options, the multitude of construction/trade contacts he has (many already under his employ) and perhaps most importantly, his experience with similar projects. This, in addition to the quality and speed with which he and his team installed the doors and windows, told us that if we were to consider working with a general contractor, he would be the one.

Next week I’m talking about our experience with a custom furniture builder. #MindsBlown His team builds beautiful things with reclaimed, hemlock barn wood.
Until then, have a great week!
Have you ever worked with a custom furniture builder? Tell us in the Comments section below!

I agree with everything, but I also think if you are capable, small easy (cheap) DIYs are fine.
I’ve never worked with a custom furniture builder but I’ve always wanted floor to ceiling, wall to wall bookcases! One day! :p
Hi Christina! Stay close for the next post re: custom furniture. I think you’ll like what you see. Thanks for your comments!
For major home repairs/changes, I would also recommend a professional. I agree that the time saved is well worth the extra labour cost. My husband is a contract painter and has very often gone in to fix a DIY job. What has taken the home owner 2 days to paint, he will redo in a few hours….”i should have called you in the first place!”call the professionals!
Hi Sylvia! We’re looking at paint colours right now as well. Benjamin Moore is leading the pack. The latest blues are stunning. We may need a quote! 🙂
No, I haven’t.
After several attempts at DIY with less than ideal results, I would have to agree!
We have had mixed results. A nightmare contractor ruined a Christmas on us, and we have had success with some DIYs. We stay away from anything electrical though!
So do we, Jody! We leave all of that to the pros. We suggest doing a plan and a walk-through with/for the electrician on big jobs though. Sorry to hear about the nightmare contractor incident 🙁 Thank you for commenting!
I have never worked with one. Maybe in the near future when I buy a home
Thank you for commenting, Christine. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions regarding your purchase financing. We’re here to help 😀
